![]() A professional warrior class, both samurai men and women practiced warrior skills. Popularly known as "the art of drawing the sword," Iaido is the contemporary legacy of the samurai of feudal Japan. He also is a student of Kybado (horseback archery) and Jodo. He also has a teaching license in Kyudo under Kanjuro Shibata Sensei. Currently he holds the rank of Shichidan (7th degree black belt) in Muso Shiden Ryu and Godan (5th degree black belt) in Jigen Ryu under Yahagi Sensei. He began to study Iai under Otani Sensei in 1972. Beginning his career in Shorin Ryu Karate under Sensei Ansei Ueshiro and Sensei James Wax, Shotokan Karate under Sensei Kurt Blackwood and Judo under Sensei Carl Jameson. ![]() As chief instructor for the New York Budokai, Sensei Phil Ortiz has studied martial arts for over 40 years. We receive frequent instruction from Sensei Ortiz either on Long Island, Manhattan or the affiliate school in New Jersey. ![]() ![]() We are the only Ryushin Shouchi-ryu Dojo on Long Island under the direction of the New York Budokai's chief instructor Sensei Phil Ortiz. ![]()
